Kimball Union Academy, a prestigious private boarding school founded in 1813, embarked on constructing two new high-performance, energy-efficient dormitory buildings designed to be Net-Zero Ready. Our team developed the design for the geothermal HVAC system and provided full mechanical services including Revit 3D design, plumbing, HVAC installation, shop fabrication, insulation, and service. We also coordinated with specialized subcontractors for geothermal drilling and looping as well as automatic temperature controls.
The project presented several challenges, including a construction timeline of less than 12 months, limited space for mechanical system infrastructure, and the need to coordinate multiple crews working simultaneously on both dormitories. Success was achieved through in-house engineering expertise, strong collaboration with an experienced geothermal subcontractor, and careful planning and communication with the construction manager and other trades. The 22,000-square-foot project was partially funded through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 for its innovative geothermal system and now serves as a model for future sustainable building initiatives at Kimball Union Academy.
